Senate Greenlights Legislation to Make Public Epstein Records

The Senate on this Tuesday gave swift approval to legislation that will require the publication of official records related to the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a almost unanimous vote in the US House of Representatives and a change of position by Donald Trump and his Republican allies. Trump's team relented after an extended period of trying to block the cross-party initiative involving a case that has followed the president since his return to the White House.

Swift Approval in Both Chambers

Senators proceeded by general agreement, which requires approval from each senator but does not require a formal roll call vote, expediting the process. Hours earlier, the House voted decisively for the bill on a near-unanimous vote.

Citizens have endured sufficient delay. Those affected have waited patiently,” Chuck Schumer stated in a floor speech on Tuesday, before asking the Senate to approve it without opposition. “Let the truth come out. Allow openness to prevail.”

Future Action

The bill next goes to Donald Trump for his approval. He indicated on Monday that he would endorse the legislation.

Even though Trump has for months dismissed the controversy over the government’s handling of the investigation as a “false narrative”, he expressed his backing for the measure over the weekend, and said he would sign the measure if it comes to him.

Support and Opposition

Opposition lawmakers, along with survivors of Epstein and their advocates who were present in a public section, cheered after the bill was passed. The sole “no” vote came from a Louisiana Republican, who said he worried the measure would reveal identifying details of individuals involved, persons of interest and others involved in the investigation.
