Cowboys Proprietor Jerry Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Offensive Signal toward Spectators
The National Football League has imposed a substantial $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he claims was an “inadvertent” offensive hand signal made toward fans during a Sunday’s game at the Jets’ stadium.
Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, but Jones insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“That was unfortunate. It was essentially an interaction with our fans out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a large group of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was brimming with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the gesture was completely unintentional, occurring amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply showed the incorrect digit,” he noted. “It was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. Should you call it unplanned, you can. However, it got corrected pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Owner Penalties
This incident isn’t the first time an league proprietor has been fined for misconduct. Previous cases include:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
- Former Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.
Jones, who is known for his media savvy, reportedly has an estimated wealth of $16 billion, making the penalty manageable for the wealthy proprietor.
