Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
