A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in national projects. They were completed at an accelerated rate, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party urged an prompt halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
