A Historic Occasion as Liam Rosenior Breaks Barriers

"He is a quality tactician that knows football intimately, and that's what matters most.

"But, in my role as the Blues' pioneering black player, I would be lying if I said this moment doesn't move me."

These were the words of the former Chelsea winger, the man who earned his historic first appearance for the Blues' first team as a substitute back in the spring of 1982.

This week, Chelsea hired Strasbourg boss Rosenior, 41, as their new head coach following the departure of Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are within the multi-club ownership group that also controls Chelsea.

There have been just twelve of African or Caribbean heritage head coaches – not including individuals holding temporary caretaker positions – in England's top flight since its inception 34 years ago.

"One thing that impresses me regarding Rosenior is that he grew up and played locally, he knows this community," continued Canoville.

"Whenever kids see someone like Liam in charge of their club, someone who looks like them, who's from their ends, from a household that champions what's right… that's profound and shows them that opportunities exist.

"So yes, this represents an enormous moment for the club, for the capital, for every aspiring individual with big dreams.

"But right now? We must support Rosenior, provide him with what he needs, and let the man do his work."

What Exactly Do the Statistics Indicate?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit was appointed the Blues' manager back in the nineties and became the Premier League's first African heritage head coach.

A dozen years on, by 2008, Paul Ince became the first black English boss in the Premier League when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo is the only other current top flight boss from a minority ethnic background.

The lack of managers of colour across English football is matched by a lack of representation at executive level.

As per the Black Footballers Partnership 2023 study, 43% of Premier League footballers are from African or Caribbean backgrounds.

However, analysis from the equality organization revealed only 3.2 percent of executive and leadership management teams at 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are from minority ethnic backgrounds.

At first-team coaching level, according to figures provided by eleven clubs, the percentage is 2%.

For all coaching roles – including senior roles – from those same 11 clubs, the statistic is just 5%.

"He's certainly broken barriers by virtue of him being announced as the Chelsea manager, and as an organization, we want to witness more such appointments," said the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged there is a wealth of ability that exists within black and underrepresented communities... they want the opportunity to show what they can do. It is imperative to persist in work hard to break those barriers down."

Additionally, the new appointee will become one of only four full-time English managers currently managing in the top flight – joining Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Scott Parker – a number that trails Europe's remaining major divisions regarding national managers.

Sixteen out of twenty top-flight managers in Serie A are from Italy, 11 in La Liga are Spanish, Twelve in the Bundesliga are German while 10 in Ligue 1 are French.

The present Chelsea caretaker manager Calum McFarlane commented: "I'm sure every aspiring British managers with a youth development pedigree will be, in some way no matter who you support, supporting Liam.

"It is really motivating for up-and-coming British academy coaches to see an individual get such a role with that profile and we hope he does highly successful."

It is vital to remember – he's there due to ability'

His father, Leroy, Rosenior Sr., had a career with clubs such as Fulham, West Ham as well as Queens Park Rangers, with his coaching stint culminating in a brief spell in charge of the third-tier club Brentford back in 2006.

Two years ago, he was awarded an MBE in that year's 2019 New Year Honours for services rendered in combating inequality in football and wider society.

After Liam hung up his boots he pursued his father's footsteps. He began writing a column for a national newspaper, and in one piece he acknowledged the lack of diversity of black coaches. He highlighted that race does not influence coaching skill and said roles must be awarded on merit.

He also made a point he would repeat: how vast lack of diversity results in a failure to understand regarding footballers with diverse cultural and ethnic heritage.

In a podcast for a football podcast, he explained the way his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "hard to manage" and "passionate", but said he understood the Netherlands international of Nigerian descent. Emegha is set to follow him with a move from France to West London in July.

In subsequent newspaper articles, Rosenior also admitted to being "embarrassed" to hear a staff member utter a discriminatory remark. He vowed support for the Premier League's Rainbow Laces initiative and wrote a public message to Donald Trump while he was in office, condemning his "overt" prejudice.

Rosenior has since made his name in the dugout – initially with Hull City, later at Strasbourg – and Wayne Rooney said this week he was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" after their collaboration with Derby.

The manager bid goodbye at Strasbourg earlier this week before signing a six‑and‑a‑half‑year deal with the Blues.

Chelsea had the top flight's first African heritage boss with Gullit as well as the first black skipper in Paul Elliott.
